Quiz: Are You a Four-Wheeler Person, a Dirt Bike Person or a Tennis Shoes Person?

QUICK ANSWER
A four-wheeler (ATV) has four wheels, stays stable when stopped and carries more gear. A dirt bike has two wheels, is lighter and quicker to turn, and you have to balance it. Walking needs no fuel at all. Take the quiz to find out which one is really you.

What are the real differences between four-wheelers, dirt bikes and walking?
Here is the quick comparison:
| Four-wheeler (ATV) | Dirt bike | Tennis shoes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wheels | Four | Two | None, just two feet |
| Balance | Stays upright when stopped | You balance it, like a bicycle with attitude | Built in, mostly |
| Carrying stuff | Racks, a cooler, sometimes a dog | A small backpack | A fanny pack with snacks |
| How you ride | Sit and shift your weight, steer with the handlebars | Stand, sit and lean it over | Walk, then walk some more |
| Needs gas? | Yes | Yes | Only if you count breakfast |
| Gear | Helmet, goggles, gloves, boots, long sleeves and pants | The same | Comfy shoes, sunscreen and a hat |
| Best at | Hauling the family and the gear, steady trails, racing | Quick turns, tight trails, jumps | Birdwatching and quiet |
| Worst at | Squeezing between two close trees | Carrying the cooler | Keeping up with the pros |
What is a four-wheeler good at?
A four-wheeler is the steady one. It stays upright when you stop, so you can pause on a hill to figure out your next move without anybody falling over. It carries more gear, so it is a favorite for family trips and for people who believe a camp chair is an essential tool. It is also a race machine: every race has four-wheeler classes where riders push hard over hills, creeks and rough ground.
What is a dirt bike good at?
A dirt bike is lighter and quicker to turn. That makes it great on tight trails and for riders who like to stand up, lean it over and let the dust fly. The tradeoff is that you are in charge of the balance, so there is more to learn at the start. Dirt bike riders also tend to pack light and say "braaap" out loud.
What is walking good at?
Walking needs no gas, no helmet and no trailer. It is the best way to notice wildflowers, and a race property is a great place to do it: they can run 200 to 400 acres, so a spectator on foot gets a real workout. If you are a tennis shoes person, you are still part of race day. Racers need people cheering, and photographers need someone to wave at.
Which one should I try first?
Not sure? Go to a race as a spectator first. You will see how everything works, you will meet the community, and you will know quickly whether your heart goes "braaap" or "ahhh, birds."

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a four-wheeler and a dirt bike?
A four-wheeler (ATV) has four wheels, stays upright when stopped and can carry more gear on its racks. A dirt bike has two wheels, is lighter and quicker to turn, and the rider has to balance it, like a bicycle with attitude.
Which is easier for a beginner, a four-wheeler or a dirt bike?
Many beginners find a four-wheeler easier to start on because it does not need balancing at low speeds. Both take practice, proper gear and, for kids, a machine that fits their age and size, so start with a lesson or a small event.
Do I have to ride to enjoy a race?
No. Races welcome spectators, and in the Missouri MXC series everyone pays the same gate fee whether they race or watch. Many people camp, explore the property and cheer from the sidelines.
What gear do I need to ride a four-wheeler or dirt bike?
A certified helmet, goggles, gloves, boots that cover the ankle, and long sleeves and long pants are the basics. Many riders add a chest protector and knee protection.
What if I am a tennis shoes person?
You are still welcome. A race property can be 200 to 400 acres, so spectators get a real workout, and photographers and cheering fans are part of every race.
